Like so many Southwest Floridians, I hail from another place. So even though Fort Myers is my home, I have family and a second residence in Dallas. Thanks to technology (and incredibly low air fares), I am able to blend my work, my play and my travel readily. Never before has it been this easy. Allow me to illustrate:
Friday: As I headed to the airport to catch a flight to Big D, my highly automated car reminded me I have 15 miles until empty and it needs maintenance. Thanks Lexus. I arrived early and while sitting at the gate I checked email and reviewed a proposal using my tablet PC with a broadband wireless card. Thanks Dell.
Saturday: While doing errands I received a call from a co-worker asking me to immediately review a spreadsheet and technical document needed for a presentation on Monday. I was able to park my car and download the attachments using my Pocket PC. Thanks Sprint. Since I was already pulled over I checked two weekend requests for service that had been dispatched to an engineer (audio message stored in text format). Thanks Sexy Software.
Sunday: Sunday is reserved for football and fortunately I could wirelessly connect my laptop at home to track my Fantasy Football results. HD technology and Direct TV satellite allowed me to watch multiple games with incredibly clarity (and yes I was winning!). Thanks NFL for spurring an entire industry to new heights.
Monday: Monday I sit in my gym shorts at my home office in Texas and take a conference call at 8:00 AM with three co-workers and a client. Also today our administrative team is in training so I will answer the phones and handle the scheduling. It is completely transparent...clients and vendors will have no idea I am working remotely. Thanks Avaya and Citrix.
I fly back to Fort Myers Monday night knowing confidently I did not miss a beat. I know I can mesh my personal and professional interests easily and reliably. I can work where I want, when I want and how I want. Thanks Technology!
